Colin Samuel Brown's Story... 2001-2006 contd;
Colin gets his wish...
Colin was granted a wish by Make-A-Wish Foundation after determining he was
medically eligible by the National Make-A-Wish guidelines and in conjunctions with both his cardiologist and pediatrician. He had a through cardiac workup in November 2005 and was found in excellent condition and cleared not to come back to cardiac clinic for a year. Colin's wish was to go to the Monster Truck World Finals in Las Vegas on March 25, 2006 a day before him and his twins birthday.
We were picked up in a stretch white limo at 4:45 am for our 7:25 am flight.
They loved the limo ride... Colin and his twin brother's (David) first. We
had a 5 to 6 hour flight but Colin brought his gameboy and backpack full of
art supplies. We arrived on Thursday afternoon March 23 and were meet by a
Karen of Make-A-Wish Foundation from the Las Vegas office. She brought us to the Rental Car area were we had a car waiting and went directly to our hotel.
My family had decided to come along on this trip and had booked their own
rooms and were already there. My sister, her husband and baby... Susan, Joe
and Brooke. My Mother Deanna and my Brother David...aka Uncle Bubby. We
had lunch and than walked around the strip hunting for souvenirs for the
boys.
Friday, March 24, 2006 we were schedule to go behind the scenes and have
private one on ones with the drivers and walk around the stadium and the car
pit area. Dave Matthews, of Clear Channel Entertainment meet us at the stadium at 10:00 am and started showing us around the drivers areas. Colin was so excited... he meet his favorite drivers... Dennis Anderson of Grave Digger and was able to get in his truck. He meet Tom Meents of Maximum Destruction and Tom picked him up and put him on his shoulder and had his picture taken with him. Tom also let Colin on his custom motorcycle he had just made. There is a picture of Colin in a wheel of Tom's truck... That was Colin's favorite picture of them all.
We meet at least 20 drivers personally and got all of their autographs that
day while walking around in the pits. He saw how the trucks looked taken
apart and went into the big tractor trailers where all the parts were
stored.
On Saturday, March 25 we arrived at 11:00 am for the Pit Party and had VIP
parking so we didn't have to walk far. We stood in line for 1 hour waiting
for the doors to open. Colin saw all the trucks put together and was able
to see other drivers that were not available on the private meet and greet.
He bought his souvenirs and watched all kinds of shows and monster truck
rides to touring all the trucks and having pictures taken in front of them.
That night we arrived at 6:00 PM for the 7:00 show and it was windy and
dusty! We were in the middle and second row back...primo seats! Finally
all the lights went out and bang....24 of the loudest things you have ever
heard came speeding into the stadium at 70 miles an hour, 3 feet apart. And
they were only 20 feet from us! The noise level alone was amazing but the
techno was awesome. Colin's eyes were wide open! The show was great! There are two parts to a Monster Jam.... Time Races and Freestyle...
Dennis Anderson of Grave Digger won the races and Tom Meents of Maximum
Destruction won the Freestyle Colin's two favorite. It lasted over 3 hours
long and the wind really started to kick up.
The next day was March 26, the boys birthday and we went to the pool and
had cake and then went to an extremely large arcade, 40,000 sq ft large.
Colin loved to go to arcades. Later that afternoon after swimming in the pool he felt a slight pain in his side and started to get sick and couldn't stop all night so at 5:30 am on Monday morning I took him to Sunrise Children's hospital where he was seen in about an hour. We were told he had a virus even though he didn't have any other symptoms except the vomiting. He was given fluids and anti nausea medicines and sent home at 2:30pm that day and stayed in bed the rest of the day playing game boy and hanging with his Uncle Bubby.
On March 27 he woke up at 6:00 with a sharp pain in his left side and turned
blue and fell to the ground. We called 911 and he went to the hospital. They could not figure out what was wrong with his heart. By the time they found out they could not do anything for him they did not have an Intensive Care Doctor to mediflight back with him to Boston or anywhere for that matter and Boston would not send their crew out because it had to make a stop. That meant the we had to search for one, they had the plane and staff but not an Intensivist available. On March 29 at 8:00 pm we found one in San Diego who could have the crew ready but they keep pushing the time back. We were up most of the night and he did get some pain meds to sleep once and on the morning of March 30th, he was having a standard medial procedure that I did not seem was warranted at that time and I was calling his cardiologist back home in Boston to intervene, a ventilator was being placed on him. I gave him a kiss at 6:00 am and said, "I love you baby" and Colin said, "Love you Mama" not knowing that would be the last words out of my baby's mouth and 15 minutes later they are pulling me into the room making me watch them do chest compressions and shocks on my baby. At 6:55 am Colin had became an angel in heaven. We had to make quick decisions on what to do with Colin. Where to autopsy... Boston, highly unusual to do away from the hospital of death. Did we want Colin's organs and internal parts to be a Donor to Children's Hospital Medial School for Research? Yes. He was a product of years of research. How do we get him home? These are all things done within the first hour of death. And there were so many other questions.
Colin was expected to live a much longer life and as a Children's Hospital
doctor once told us..."When you are given the OK not to come back for a
year... that's considered the Golden Ticket that he is in great shape." His
heart was working extremely well and to this date they do not know what
happen. His autopsy results came back 8 weeks to the date stating that he had a heart attack. He was in the children's hospital with the classic symptons of a heart attack and no one thought to check that a heart child with a 3 page long history could have had a heart attack. On his first ER visit I requested a cardio consult and was told... "It is only a virus Mrs. Brown." They released him with a heart rate over 140 bpm... no ekg's or echo's.
We miss our funny guy so much. All he ever wanted to do was make people around him laugh and be happy. He never was sad and was always smiling. There isn't an hour that doesn't go by that we don't feel this incredible empty space where sunshine use to be.
With love we remember you, with hope we face each day, with faith we will be reunited for eternity.
Mommy, Daddy and David
